- ItemOpen AccessEssentials of an LFG analysis of Hungarian finite sentences(2014) Laczkó TiborIn this paper I present an LFG (and XLE-implementable) analysis of the preverbal portion of Hungarian finite clauses. The structural representation is largely motivated by É. Kiss (1992) and Laczkó & Rákosi (2008-2014). I argue for S and against IP (and I also postulate CP). I employ a hierarchical, binary branching, adjunction structure for the topic field, in addition to a similar setup in the quantifier field. I handle all the question phrases other than the question phrase immediately adjacent to the verb in multiple constituent questions as occupying VP-adjoined positions in the quantifier field. I assume that focussed constituents, verbal modifiers and the (verb-adjacent) question phrase are in complementary distribution in [Spec,VP]. On the basis of the analysis proposed in this paper, I suggest that LFG’s parametric space that is potentially available to c-structure—function associations should be augmented along the following lines. (i) The [Spec,VP] position should be allowed to host the FOCUS discourse function. (ii) The XP in [S XP VP] can also be a topic, in addition to a subject. (iii) A VP constituent can also contain a subject.
- ItemOpen AccessLexicalising Clausal Syntax(John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2021) Laczkó Tibor"The book presents a new perspective on clausal syntax and its interactions with lexical and discourse function information by analysing Hungarian sentences. It also demonstrates ways in which grammar engineering implementations can provide insights into how complex linguistic processes interact. It analyses the most important phenomena in the preverbal domain of Hungarian finite declarative and wh-clauses: sentence structure, operators, verbal modifiers, negation and copula constructions. Based on the results of earlier generative linguistic research, it presents the fundamental empirical generalisations and offers a comparative critical assessment of the most salient analyses in a variety of generative linguistic models from its own perspective. It argues for a lexical approach to the relevant phenomena and develops the first comprehensive analysis in the theoretical framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar. It also reports the successful implementation of crucial aspects of this analysis in the computational linguistic platform of the theory, Xerox Linguistic Environment"-- Provided by publisher.
- ItemOpen AccessModelling (in)definiteness, external possessors and (typological) variation in Hungarian possessive DPs.(2017) Laczkó TiborIn this paper I set out to model the encoding of definiteness in Hungarian possessive DPs with particular attention to the (non)complementarity of definiteness markers and possessive markers. I develop a formal LFG account of the relevant phenomena. Its essence is that I propose that in Hungarian DPs the DEF feature is nonunifiable. Naturally, the definite article always encodes this feature, while some possessor types also encode it, and others do not. The latter can only require that this feature should be present in the possessive DP. It is in this way that I capture the (non)co-occurrence of the definite article and various possessors.
