dc.description.abstractKertész Imre Sorstalanság című regénye két egymástól jelentősen eltérő angol fordítás-ban is olvasható, amelyek közül az első, a Katharina M. Wilson és Christopher Wilson által készített 1992-es Fateless című amerikai kiadás nem nyerte el a szerző tetszését, de a második, Tim Wilkinson Fatelessness címmel 2004-ben megjelent fordítását örömmel fogadta. Jelen tanulmány célja, hogy feltárja a regény angol recepciójának kulturálisan kötött sajátosságait, amelynek érdekében egy tágabb befogadástörténeti és fordításelméleti nézőpontból hasonlítja össze a két angol szövegváltozatot. A két fordítás összehasonlító elemzése egyrészt felhívja a figyelmet az újrafordítás mögötti motiváció kérdésére, másrészt megerősíti az újrafordítási hipotézis relevanciáját, mely szerint a legelső fordítás a célnyelvi, míg az újrafordítás sokkal inkább a forrásnyelvi elvárásokat és sajátosságokat tükrözi.hu
dc.description.abstractThe Hungarian novel Sorstalanság by Imre Kertész is available in two, significantly different English translations. The author did not like Fateless, the first translation by Katharina M. Wilson and Christopher Wilson published in 1992 in the USA, but welcomed the 2004 translation by Tim Wilkinson entitled Fatelessness . In order to highlight the culture specific features of the English reception of the novel, this study compares the two English versions from a broader perspective combining findings of reception history with translation theory. This comparative analysis calls attention to the significance of motivation behind retranslation, and also proves the relevance of retranslation hypothesis, according to which first translations tend to be more target culture oriented while retranslations focus more strongly on text specific features and expectations that derive from the source culture.en
