A tanulmány a Bolyai János Kutatási Ösztöndíj támogatásával készült.
dc.description.abstract This paper analyses the issue of social determination through the life path of a woman of Roma origin in Hungary. Its principal aim is to demonstrate how stereotypes like social determination concerning Roma minority communities can become a self-fulfilling reality. The analysis is based on a narrative drawn from an anthropological documentary, complemented by additional findings from systematically repeated fieldwork. The interpretation is framed by John W. Berry’s concept of acculturation and Gabriele Rosenthal’s narrative life-course analysis. The paper argues that social determination should not be understood as an objective necessity but rather as a mutually reinforced stereotype. The life path examined in this study demonstrates that adaptive integration, even among disadvantaged individuals, can be a successful strategy. The conclusions presented here may contribute positively to Roma–non-Roma coexistence and to the broader understanding of mechanisms of social mobility.en
