- ItemRestrictedA comparative analysis of the use of ‘thereof’ in an English non-translated text and the English machine- and human-translated versions of the Hungarian criminal code(2022) Kovács Tímea; Anglisztika Tanszék; Angol Nyelvészeti Tanszék; KRE – Bölcsészet- és Társadalomtudományi KarOwing to the recent rise of neural language translation, a paradigm shift has been witnessed regarding the role of translators and reviewers. As neural machine translation is increasingly more capable of modelling how natural languages work, the traditional tasks of translators are being gradually replaced by new challenges. More emphasis is placed on pre- and post-editing (revision) skills and competences, presumably enabling the production of higher quality and near human-made translations. In my paper, I attempt to demonstrate through the qualitative and quantitative comparison of machine-translated legal texts (acts) to human-translated ones the relevant challenges and dynamic contrasts arising in the process of translating. Through the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the original Hungarian (source language) Criminal Code and its English (target language) machine and human translations, I aim to highlight the peculiar challenges emerging in the process of translation. I also aim to demonstrate what patterns can be observed in translations produced by human and non-human translators.

Pintérné Márkus Katalin; Angol Nyelvészeti Tanszék; Anglisztika Intézet; KRE - Bölcsészet- és Társadalomtudományi KarThe paper presents a project devised by Georgian and Hungarian lexicographers which aims at improving dictionary use skills and dictionary culture in Georgia and Hungary. The project is based on previous experience, studies and findings of its authors at Ilia State University (Georgia) and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary. The feedback gathered from theoretical lexicography courses and the needs of the students emerging from these courses revealed the necessity to concentrate more on practical issues of teaching dictionary skills. The cross-border cooperation project will be divided into two stages. At the initial stage, the shortcomings in dictionary skills among students, as well as the special needs of students and teachers will be identified with the help of a questionnaire, supplemented by interviews and tests to refine the data. The results of the survey will be used in the next stage for the development of teaching materials, which will include a workbook (in print and e-book format), a teacher’s book (in print and e-book format), as well as a variety of online tools and exercises for language learners which will help them explore reference skills from many different angles and in different situations.

Choi’s recent novel, Kay’s Lucky Coin Variety (2016) contains ample references to the differences between Western and Eastern ways of courtship, romance and marriage. Applying Kim Min-Sun’s cultural communication theory to the analysis as described in her book entitled Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication (2002), the paper will explore how the diasporic Korean-Canadian female protagonist, Yu-Rhee/ Mary’s ideas and experience of male-female relationships are affected by her Korean cultural heritage and the Canadian environment in which she grows up.

Több szerző foglalkozik a jogi szaknyelv jellemzőivel, valamint a nyelveken, kultúrákon és jogi intézményi rendszereken átívelő interlingvális jogi fordítás legfontosabb problémáival. Ugyanakkor a gépi fordítás az elmúlt pár évben megfigyelhető robbanásszerű fejlődése és az annak nyomán kialakult új és egyre nagyobb jelentőséggel bíró utószerkesztés (poszteditálás) újabb kihívások elé állítja a fordítástudományt és a gyakorló fordítókat. Ha egyre több szöveg és azok fordítása válik elektronikus formában szinte mindenki számára könnyen elérhetővé, az milyen új feladatok és elvárások elé állítja a fordítókat és utószerkesztőket (poszteditorokat)? Hogyan alakul át a fordítói minőségi sztenderd fogalma? Hogyan definiálhatjuk az ideális (jogi) szaknyelvi fordítást, mely mind a gépi, mind a humán fordítás minőségi szintje lehet?

Encouraging students to actively engage with their own texts is even more relevant when courses are offered in a hybrid or entirely online learning environment. During distance education, when measuring learning is becoming problematic, students reflecting on and experimenting with their work can inform the teacher, but more importantly, can promote a deeper understanding of the writing process and the written product. An effective revision and self-editing of a draft requires top-down and bottom-up approaches to the text. This study discusses how students can assess their own writing on three levels: lexically, syntactically, and at the discourse level by incorporating corpus linguistic tools in their self-assessment process. This includes vocabulary profiling, evaluating cohesion and analysing variation in register and genres. The exercises are beneficial in undergraduate language courses and also in teacher and translator training.

- ItemOpen AccessTeaching Cultural Differences through Korean Canadians: Teaching Material Development for English as a Foreign Language Classes(2019) Nagy Judit; Bánhegyi Mátyás; Anglisztika Intézet; Angol Nyelvészeti Tanszék; KRE - Bölcsészet- és Társadalomtudományi KarStudents of English as a foreign language must possess intercultural communicative skills in order to be able to interpret and discuss the cultural diversity that surrounds them when they use English for communicational purposes. This paper claims, and is based on the conviction, that the development of these skills takes place primarily through teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in most educational contexts. This approach is facilitated by the fact that the English language functions as the most widely used foreign language in the context of culture teaching.

The paper examines the use of sea metaphors in Atlantic Canadian short stories written between 1900 and 1930. Lakoff and Kövecses’s cognitive concept of the metaphor will provide the theoretical framework for the identification and classification of sea metaphors surfacing in the texts to be analysed. Using the socio-cultural background information provided in the first part of the paper, the more substantial second part will constitute the actual analysis, which will concentrate on the sea metaphor use of the works of prominent Atlantic Canadian short story writers from the golden age of the sea story.

The definitions given for this compound as a headword are compared and analysed, and the lexical categorization of the examples cited in the definitions is also checked against their categorization as headwords. Thus the internal consistency of these dictionaries can be scrutinized, and the similarities and the differences in the treatment of certain bound morphemes that linguists normally classify as ʻcombining forms’ can be revealed in these dictionaries and even within the same dictionary family.

The author demonstrates through her own examples the relevant challenges arising in the foregoing types of translation by relying on the results of background research conducted with professional translators. The examples demonstrate the peculiar challenges in the process of transcreation at a (socio)pragmatic level, and in software localization at a linguistic structural level. Such challenges are triggered by dynamic contrasts activated in the process. At the end of this study, the author attempts to comprehensively compare the relevant aspects of writing and translation activated in the process of ‘copywriting’, ‘transcreation’, and ‘software localization’.

- ItemOpen AccessWord-stress and the distribution of consonant clusters in English(2024) Csides Csaba; Anglisztika Intézet; Angol Nyelvi Tanszék; KRE - Bölcsészet- és Társadalomtudományi KarEmpty categories have been around in linguistics for a long time already. In particular, Strict CV-Phonology promotes a strictly alternating CV skeleton where members of a traditional consonant cluster enclose an empty vocalic position, while the two consecutive vocalic positions of a long vowel or a diphthong flank an empty consonantal position. Although the concept of empty skeletal positions might seem strange at first blush, its importance can be likened to the importance of the concept of zero in mathematics. This also means that traditional consonant clusters are just surface manifestations of underlying CVCV sequences. The aim of this paper is to seek a principled account for the distribution of different types of vocalic positions and consonant clusters by promoting the algorithm put forward in Csides (2008). It seems that this algorithm treats the distribution of different types of consonant clusters and the distribution of stressed versus unstressed vocalic positions in a unified manner. In order to be able to grasp the parallel between stress-related issues and the distribution of different types of consonant clusters, we must part with some of the basic tenets of standard Government Phonology and Strict CV. Contrary to mainstream assumptions, I wish to maintain bidirectional government in Phonology, cf. Csides (2008). It is important to emphasize that unidirectional theories have been promoted mainly in the phonological literature. Scheer (2004), Szigetvári (1999) and many others assume that government in phonology is strictly right-to-left, an idea that probably originates in the concepts of Proper Government (PG) of standard GP. Rowicka (1999), however, assumes that government proceeds in the opposite direction, i.e., it is left-to-right. Csides (2008) resolves this conflict by proposing that government goes in both directions but in a principled manner. Another novel, non-mainstream proposal of Csides (2008) is also maintained in the present framework, namely that government can target empty and contentful skeletal positions alike.
